From Start to Submission. Fundamentals of PhD Supervision

Effective PhD supervision is crucial for ensuring high-quality research outcomes and supporting the professional growth of early-career researchers. As supervision increasingly demands not only subject expertise but also strong interpersonal, organizational, and ethical skills, young academics need a solid foundation to guide doctoral candidates successfully. This workshop addresses the core challenges and responsibilities of PhD supervision, from initiating supervision agreements to navigating the writing and submission process. Participants will reflect on their supervisory roles, learn about good practices, and develop strategies for effective communication and mentoring. In doing so, the workshop fosters a proactive and reflective approach to supervision that benefits both supervisors and their doctoral candidates.

After the workshop, participants are able to…

• Reflect critically on their role and responsibilities as PhD supervisors
• Design a structured supervision cycle tailored to their academic context
• Identify and define key competencies that PhD candidates should possess or develop during the doctoral phase
