Higher education didactis and teaching development
The Department of Higher Education Didactics and Digital Teaching Development offers a wide range of services to support the development of teaching competencies and innovation in teaching, thereby contributing to the improvement of the quality of learning and teaching.
The range of workshops and services on higher education didactics adresses all teaching staff at the University of Freiburg and is connected with the “Center for Higher Education Didactics of the Universities of Baden-Württemberg (HDZ)”.
In addition to workshops on various aspects of teaching and learning and consultation on specific issues, it is also possible to obtain the modular, ministerial “Baden-Württemberg Certificate for University Didactics” (see below).
Furthermore, the Department of Higher Education Didactics and Digital Teaching Development develops specific formats and offers for teaching and curriculum development for institutes.
The program “Baden-Württemberg Certificate for University Didactics”

Module I “Teaching and Learning”
Basics of teaching and learning at universities (60 LU*)
This module will allow you to deepen your understanding of the requirements for teaching and learning at higher education institutions, systematically expand and reflect on your didactic knowledge, and test your didactic competencies in practice.
- Fit for Teaching – Basics of Teaching and Learning at University Level (32 LU)
- Case based reflection on teaching (3 sessions; 12 LU)
- Peer feedback on teaching and learning (Classroom shadowimg, 16 LU)
- Individual Reflection (4 LU)
Module II “Teaching and Learning”
Deepening specific topics (60 LU*)
In Module II, you will have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of topics that are particularly relevant to your specific teaching activities. You will be choosing courses covering all four subject areas and 60 leanring units (~8 days).
- Planning, designing and conducting courses
- Advising, supporting and assessing students
- Evaluating and reflecting on teaching
- Innovating and developing teaching and curricula
Module III “Teaching and Learning”
Establishing individual areas of focus (80 LU*)
In Module III, you will apply the skills and experience you acquired in Modules I and II to further develop your own teaching and teaching personality and to refine your personal teaching profile. Module III comprises 80 learning units, which are divided as follows:
- Implementation and written documentation of an individual Module III project (72 LU).
- Written final reflection (8 LU) reflecting on personal skill development throughout the entire certification process (Modules I-III).
The individual Module III project can be carried out in one of the following 4 variants. Some variants can also be combined with each other:
- Option 1: Teaching innovation project (up to 72 LU)
- Option 2: Structure and curriculum development (32–72 LU)
- Option 3: Product development for teaching (32–72 LU)
- Option 4: Individual development (up to 72 LU) with a choice between further development and reflection or portfolio.
The Baden-Württemberg Certificate comprises 7 ECTS credits. The certificate can be recognized in doctoral degree programs and for habilitations in accordance with the relevant habilitation regulations. The respective degree programs or habilitation committees decide on recognition.
